Drake's Island Drift PDF Print E-mail

My personal favourite drift at almost any time of year. Springs and mid tides make the best conditions for a super fast ride, but permission from Longroom on channel 14 is essential unless you want to be pulled over and fined by the MOD Police. As this dive is inside the break water it is well protected from the elements.

Length: 1 mile

Max Depth: 6-16m unless you swing into the channel. Be vary aware of the topography as it isn't to hard to end up pushed into a 40m deep trench.

Depth to deck: n/a

Viz: 3-6m, although 0m is quite common in winter.

Orientation: Follow the current and and head towards the island to stay away from the channel. The silt can obscure very quickly, so buddy lines are recomended for the less experienced.

Buoy Lines
Because this is inside the port and a drift, permanent Surface Marker Buoy must be used.

Areas of interest

The eel grass beds close in to the island are supposed to be habitat for a British sea horse. Look out for Thornback rays in the silt.

No Take Zone

All the lobsters and scallops are thought to contain hazardous levels of tritium.

Life you could see

Lots of thornback rays, spider crabs, sea hares (a big ugly nudiranch) and the possibility of a sea horse...
