Mewstone & Mewstone Ledges PDF Print E-mail

A superb reef type dive site with rocky gullies leading off down to 25 - 30m max. There have been ships wrecked here but all are extremely broken up and there is little evidence except the odd piece of pottery or small broken artifacts.

Max Depth: Anything from 12 - 30m depending on where you drop and what you want.

Viz: Generally 6 - 8m at best 20m+ although bad weather will make it worse.

Orientation: This is a large site that extends away from the Mewstone in every direction.

Buoy Lines

None, please use a shot for descent and a Delayed SMB per diver for the ascent. This area can get busy with a lot of passing yacht traffic so marking your position on ascent is absolutely essential. Currents can get very fast here so free descents are not recommended.

Areas of interest

In close to the Mewstone and in shallow areas there is alot of kelp. As you move further away (East or South East is best) you can dive through areas that are best described as underwater gardens. With small rocky walls and ledges, and sand beds in between.

No Take Zone
Part of the Wembury Marine Conservation area so no take.

Life you could see

Below 18m, Sea Fans, Rose Coral and Yellow Sponges. Across the whole site you can sometimes find lobsters, crayfish, along side plenty of dogfish and wrasse. Pollack often follow you around and once we saw porpoises nosing in the sand for food. There are plenty of sea urchins and starfish of all types and sea cucumbers everywhere.
