We call it 'marine debris' as if it were rubbish that the sea manufactures. It doesn't, we the human race do. That's us. And it's only us that can change and improve the situation. But in order to change we need to have the facts. How much rubbish, what kind, where and where is it from.
That's where this course comes in. It's part of a global initiative to tackle the problem of debris in the sea.
Every year tens of thousands of marine animals and seabirds die from eating or getting tangled up in rubbish in the sea. Rubbish also damages habitats, makes coastal areas unattractive to visit and is expensive to remove. As much as seventy percent of the rubbish entering our ocean sinks to the seafloor; only we have the skills to tackle underwater marine debris.
By completing Dive Against Debris™ surveys you help to build the picture from an underwater perspective. The data you collect through Dive Against Debris™ helps drive changes that protect marine life and marine environments.
The course aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to complete Dive Against Debris™ surveys, the safe removal of marine debris underwater, and the reporting of data to Project AWARE.
Dive Against Debris™ surveys and the data submitted are essential to help drive change and inform policy. Completing regular Dive Against Debris™ surveys at the same location over time is the best way to build a comprehensive database and identify hotspot areas where waste management needs to be prioritised. Use this course to build a team of surveyors who regularly complete Dive Against Debris™ surveys.
